1937 Penny (Edward VIII)
Edward VIII was in line to be crowned but he knew if he did he would not be allowed to marry
Wallis Simpson, so he abdicated and his younger brother George VI stepped up to become
king.

No 1937 Edward VIII penny coins were struck for circulation. There were a very small number
of pattern coins produced but these are very rare and command a high price as they are
highly sought after by collectors.

Due to the demand by collectors and the fact that many collectors can't afford to spend tens of
thousands of pounds on a coin many replicas of it have been produced and they can be
picked up for only a few pounds. The replicas shouldn't be treated as a numismatic item but
they are a novelty and they do fill a gap for some collectors.
