| Designed by William Wyon. The bronze "bun head" issue was designed by Leonard Wyon and the "old head" issue by Thomas Brock and engraved by George William de Saulles. The "Young head" obverse features the portrait of Queen Victoria with a date below. The reverse features a seated Britannia with the words BRITANNIAR: REG: FID: DEF:. The "Bun head" obverse features the portrait of Queen Victoria. While the reverse contains the words "HALFPENNY" above a seated picture of Britannia with a lighthouse to her left, a ship at sea to her right and date below. The "Old head" obverse features the portrait of queen Victoria. While the reverse contains the words "HALFPENNY" above a seated picture of Britannia with ship at sea to her left, sea line to her right and date below. During 1874-6 & 1881-2 some bronze Halfpenny's were struck by Ralph Heaton & Sons (Birmingham) and they have a small H mint mark just below the centre of the date. 1838-60, Copper, 18.8 grams, 34mm Diameter. 1860-1901 Bronze, 9.4 grams, 31mm Diameter. |
