| The Victoria half sovereign was extensively used and circulated. They are not rare but they are hard to find in extra fine condition or better. The "Young head" was designed and engraved by William Wyon. The "Jubilee head" designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm The "Old head" was and the reverse were designed by Sir Thomas Brock. The reverse shield design was modified from the design by Johann Baptiste Merlen. The George and dragon reverse is a modified version of Benedetto Pistrucci's design. The half Sovereign was also issued for use in Australia (Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney), and have a small M, P, or S mintmark. The half Sovereigns produced in Britain have no mintmark. The mintmarks are positioned just below the shield or on the ground above the date on the George and dragon reverses. 1838-1901 Gold, 4 grams, 19mm Diameter. |
