WILLIAM & MARY HALF GUINEA 1689-1694
William & Mary Half Guinea 1689 (Obverse 1, Reverse 1)
There are two different obverses and two different reverses issued for the half guinea of William & Mary. The reverse of the William & Mary half guinea like the other gold coins of this series was a totally a new design unlike any before or after until George II and III. Instead of the more traditional four shield design separated by four sceptres it has all the shields in one ornamental shield or garter with a single crown above. Some half guineas have an elephant and castle below bust which donates that the gold used came from the Africa Company. No half guineas were minted at local provincial mints.
