WILLIAM & MARY FIVE GUINEAS 1686-1688
William & Mary Five Guineas 1691 (Obverse 1, Reverse 1)
There is only one obverse and two different reverses issued for the five guineas of William & Mary. The reverse of the William & Mary five guinea like the other gold coins of this series was a totally a new design unlike any before or after until George II. Instead of the more traditional four shield design separated by four sceptres it has all the shields in one ornamental shield or garter with a single crown above. The William & Mary five guineas was minted every year from 1691 to 1694. Some five guineas have an Elephant and castle below bust which donates that the gold used came from the Africa Company. No five guineas were minted at local provincial mints.
